Renoir : French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style.
Noir : meaning black in french. This emphasises the bold.
Sculpture : figures that involve shaped curves and neat cuts.
Why these inspirations? The impressionists were radicle, going beyond imagination and skills like the extended cuts beyond the baselines in the font. This typeface was inspired to be clean, cut, sculpted and of a bold value.
The Process
The characteristics: 1. Use of a slanted cut on letters moderately. 2. The slanted cuts extend further than the baseline for letters with vertical stroke. 3. The regular weight size is more toward the bolder side.
Weights and relativity: To start off, I decided a base width for the small letters and maintained a weight balance between the capital and small letters.
The vertical, the horizontal and the curvilinear strokes: Hence letter structuring began. I had to create a set of rules and structures for similar characters of the alphabet and birth new letters from the characteristics of created ones. 4 elements were considered here: 1. Width 2. Weight 3. Joints and ending 4. Readability and legibilit
The numerals: Treatment of the letter characteristics is applied across the numerals and special characters. Keep in mind: all numerals(with spacing) take up the same space as uppercase H (with spacing).
The treatment of characteristics is applied over all letters, numerals and special characters
Weights, width and slant:
With the regular font in place, we now create: 1. The different weights – Thin, Light, Black 2. Widths – Condensed, Expanded 3. Slant – Italic 4. And a combination of all of these
The Application
Time to play. I manipulated the font a little to make the existing James bond movie poster a little more effective.
This typeface is ready to be used as a logotype for minimalistic products.
Due to the radicle up and down slant cuts, the font seems to have a dancing feel making it almost whimsical – perfect for a contemporary but quirky based text like the one scripted by myself on the left.
